This 350 Legend cartridge by Federal is great for hunting deer, but its price tag isn’t so burdensome that you’ll be afraid to practice with it as well! It’s a Power-Shok load, perfect for filling your bag limit without going so broke that you’ll need to pawn your fillings just to afford instant noodles.
This round owes its deer toppling terminal performance to its soft point bullet. Nothing fancy, but plenty effective with a concentric copper jacket that assists with weight retention for great penetration. The SP bullet’s soft lead core makes up its flat nose, so it transfers decent energy right at the instant of impact followed by significant terminal expansion. And thanks to its 0.245 ballistic coefficient, this bullet maintains a relatively flat trajectory until it plows into its quarry with over 1,000 ft lbs of energy up to around 175 yards!
A Power-Shok round’s brass case is reloadable, so you can bank on this its consistent dimensions and straight-as-a-whistle wall the first, second, and third time you fire it. Although some variation is inevitable, Federal does a good job matching a primer and propellant to produce a steady 2,100 fps muzzle velocity.
- The all-new 350 Legend cartridge is engineered for deer hunters to deliver massive downrange energy transfer with improved penetration from a modern straight-walled cartridge. The oversized impact diameter of the Extreme Point® bullet offers bigger impact trauma for larger wound cavities and faster knockdown.
- BXR offering utilizes Matrix Tip technology from the popular Browning BXR line. BXR Rapid Expansion Matrix Tip is designed specifically for use on whitetail, backtrail, mule deer and antelope. The proprietary matrix tip design allows for high downrange velocity and energy retention while also initiating rapid positive expansion. The jacket and tip combination yields precision accuracy, rapid energy transfer and generates massive knockdown power.
- In June 2014, Michigan’s Natural Resources Commission (NRC) approved the regulation to allow the limited use of certain rifles capable of using .35-caliber or larger ammunition with straight-walled cartridges that have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches and a maximum case length of 1.8 inches to take deer in the limited firearms deer zone. In March 2017, the NRC recommended the law’s sunset provision be removed “entirely.”These dimensions were aimed at making sure that no bullet of that diameter fired from that type of case would travel far enough from the muzzle to pose much of a threat to potentially nearby residents. While this law started in Michigan, it has since spread to other states including Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
